Initial Steps: April 2020 to September 2020

  • Start early and by August, shortlist 8-12 universities that you will apply to. Visit university websites and note application requirements, deadlines etc.
  • By September, be familiar with bank loan options and scholarships to fund your studies.
  • Begin by downloading admissions brochures from the university websites. Most brochures are out more than a year earlier.
  • Do some initial research on various accommodation options.

Crack the Exams: June 2020 to December 2020

  • Prepare for required standardised tests like GMAT, GRE, SATTOEFLIELTS, or PTE - depending on the course and university.
  • By June-July or three months before the test date, register for GMAT/GRE.
  • Register for TOEFL/IELTS at least a month before the test date.
  • Take the required tests around September. Plan for buffer time in case you need to retake the test.

It’s application time: August 2020 to October 2020

  • Shortlist the colleges and prepare for your application. Think hard about what makes you unique as an applicant and sketch out your strengths and self-assessment.
  • Contact your professors and direct managers for the required 2-3 reference letters. At least a month before your application deadline.
  • Begin drafting your SOP and essays. Give a month’s time to structure these documents properly.
  • Apply before the deadline

Students can now send documents to universities and save flat 40% on their courier shipments using DHL student offer through Shiksha.

What next: November 2020 to April 2021

  • Don’t delay replying to college e-mails. And there will be quite a few!
  • Appear for personal/video interviews. These are scheduled around January to March.
  • Once you get acceptance letters, make your decision as soon as possible.
  • Depending on the deadline, notify the universities of your decision.
  • You will need to pay a non-refundable deposit to confirm your admission.

Visa and money matters: May 2021 to July 2021

  • Search for and begin applying for external scholarships (if applicable).
  • Apply for student loan, after you get your acceptance letter.
  • Gather paperwork for your student visa. Check visa requirements.
  • Apply for student visa in time. Keep in mind the time taken for visa processing!

Get ready to fly: July 2021 to August 2021

  • Book airline tickets.
  • Arrange for an Internation Debit/Credit card.
  • Collect all the documents and their photocopies, to take along.
  • Check out Pre-departure checklist!

I need information about September 2020 intake.

Dear Tarsem,
As the article states above, most of the university deadlines for September intake begin the previous year and end at the beginning of the intake year. So, it would be better to plan the February 2021 intake. The University deadlines for Feb intake would be open as of now. While preparing for it, you would also get time to take the eligibility exams like GRE and IELTS. It would also allow you to do the visa formalities in time. Meanwhile, also arrange the funds and application material such as SOP, LORs, etc. Hope this helps you.

Please elucidate the admissions of September intake 2020 in Canada in view of covid

Hi HK,
The students, who have received an admission letter for September 2020 intake, would be communicated by their respective universities on the conduct of their classes for both online and campus classes. Hence, the students whose sessions were to begin in September 2020 need to connect with their respective universities or check on the official websites to know about their class schedules. For those who are planning to apply for September 2020, the university deadlines would have already closed at the beginning of 2020. It would be better to plan the February 2021 intake.

Dear Harmanjot,
Academic gap years need to be justified with either professional experience or some relevant coursework or training done related to the field of study. Canada is a strict country for academic applications. Hence, you need to be very careful about your application and choose the right set of universities. For information on work permit in Canada, please visit https://studyabroad.eservicestar.com/all-about-post-study-work-permit-in-canada-applycontent5972.
Good luck!

Hi Dipto,
The ideal time for applying for a student visa is 3 months before the day of flying abroad. Hence, if you are planning to take off in August, then you should apply for a visa in May-June 2020. Try not to apply later than June, because early applicants have a higher rate of visa approval.

I have completed my B.E.degree in mechanical engineering in July 2015 with 7.63 cgpa and 7 backlogs and got 6.5 bands in IELTS not less than 6 so am I able to get admission for MSc in mechanical engineering in Canadian University?

Shilpa Saxena

Hi Dharam,
Canadian universities are strict about backlog acceptance in their master's programmes. However, you may try your luck with some universities that accept up to 8 backlogs. For this, you need to have a minimum of 65% undergraduate score.

You may check your chances of getting selected in MS Mechanical Engineering in Canada by clicking on 'Rate My Chances' against the university names here https://studyabroad.eservicestar.com/canada/ms-in-mechanical-engineering-colleges-ds.
