A common question we often come across by the study abroad aspirants is whether or not backlogs matter. To answer this, it entirely depends upon the region you aspire to study in. Before we move on to discuss which regions accept backlogs and which do not, it is important to understand what backlogs exactly are and how they are counted.

What is backlog?

快穿系统女主深吻hA backlog is an exam that you could not clear in the first attempt. Please note that it is mandatory to appear for the exam the next time under any circumstances in order to avail your degree from the institution of study. You cannot apply to universities abrod with active backlogs.

Absenteeism:快穿系统女主深吻h In an ideal situation, absenteeism should not be counted as a backlog. For instance, if you did not appear for the exam due to sickness, accident, or any other genuine reason. However, in the case of absenteeism, you should always confirm from your academic institution whether they mark an 'Absent' or write 'Zero' in the score column against the exam subject that you could not appear for. It is essential to confirm this from the institute because 'a zero in the score column' would refer to Backlog, not Absent. If you have already received your academic transcript, then you should check in your mark sheet whether yours is marked as a Backlog or an Absenteeism.

Now, coming back to attempting to clear the backlogs for the subjects you failed in. Backlogs are often confused with the number of attempts a student makes to clear a subject. Students need to understand this difference.

How are backlogs counted?

In most of the countries, Number of Attempts  Number of Backlogs!

The number of times you have appeared to clear a subject has got nothing to do with the number of your backlogs. For example, if you had to appear 5 times to clear a backlog in one subject, you still had only 1 backlog (not 5). However, if you had to clear 5 subjects and you did that in 1 attempt each, you still had 5 backlogs. You cannot have 20 subjects and more than 20 backlogs, even if you failed in all of them 10 times each

While some countries count the number of attemps as the number of backlogs. In Australia and Germany, Number of Attempts = Number of Backlogs!

These countries pay special emphasis to the attempts taken by a student in clearing a backlog to judge a student's sincerity towards examination. However, it is necessary to understand that if the backlog subject was not a major one, then some universities consider that student's application.

What is a backlog certificate?

A backlog certificate is a sheet issued by your academic institution that has details about your backlogs. In case you had no backlogs, your institute would not provide you with any such certificate. Whether you have or do not have backlogs, universities abroad may ask you to submit a backlog certificate to certify your academic records along with . Sepcially, if you are applying to Australian Universities, you would need to ask your academic institution to provide you with a 'zero backlog' certificate for clearance. Check out all the details on backlog certificate here

Can you study abroad with backlogs?

The answer to this question is Yes, but not for every country. Backlogs are accepted in almost every country. Nevertheless, there is always a limited number of backlogs that are accepted in every region. Every college, national or international, wants to select the best candidates for sure. What students need to understand in this regard is what makes their profile strong. There are many good universities across the globe that select average profile if they find them suitable for the kind of courses they have to offer.

Where the Backlogs Matter and where they don't?

Colleges that accept average candidates from across the world have some or the other selection criteria for their profile evaluation. Some colleges focus on your clear academic records where there is no scope for backlogs, while some select you on the basis of your recent scores in the standardised exams such as , GRE, , , , , and . Other criteria for getting selected by these colleges are your curricular and non-curricular achievements. Let us discuss the countries and explore universities that accept backlogs.

In your above article you have written that "Absenteeism will not be counted as backlog" under the topic " What is backlog". And now you are telling that it will be considered as a backlog in an answer given to me(Ajay Rana) in the comments below.

Hi Ajay,
The article clearly says "If you did not appear for the exam due to sickness or any other issues, it is not counted as a backlog. However, in the case of absenteeism, you should always confirm from your academic institution whether they mark an absent or write zero in the score column." I have written this because 'a zero in the score column' would refer to a backlog, not absent.

In the recent past, I have encountered numerous cases where the students have confirmed that their absenteeism has been marked as a backlog rather than being counted as absenteeism. Thus, you should either check in your mark sheet (if you already have one) or confirm from your educational institution whether yours would be marked as a backlog or absenteeism.
Anyways, thank you for pointing this out, I will elaborate on this in the article.

快穿系统女主深吻hIn my grade sheet they have written "Ab" grade(Absent) .Bt they have counted that subject for calculating CGPA and considered zero for that. But I thought that backlogs should be the ones that have "F"(Fail) grade.Or both have equal disadvantages during admission?

快穿系统女主深吻hDear Ajay, as you have confirmed that the university has counted zero for the subject while calculating your CGPA, it would mean that they have counted it as a backlog. In this case, you would have an updated CGPA, the latter one would have the score of the re-appeared exam. Now, while you are using the updated score for university application, if they ask about your backlog history and tell you how it can affect your chances of admission, you should inform the admission committee about you absenteeism and the reason behind it.

Ok mam thanks.I have all the required documents for my medical condition. And by providing all those documents what are the chances that they would be satisfied as it is a genuine case or by mentioning about the same in the SOP?

Dear Ajay, it is really difficult to comment on that. It depends entirely on the university's admission committee and its rules. If the university rules are too strict towards absenteeism, then the chances will be lower; if the university is lenient towards backlogs, then the chances are higher. Every university is different, and so are their rules.

As I said earlier as well, you may refer to the list of US universities accepting backlogs here: . These universities will accept your candidature with backlogs as well. If you have other choices in mind, the best way to find out your chances would be by connecting with our admission counsellors. They can guide you through the entire admission process and later help you with the visa filing as well.

Hi Arya,
Boards are quite tricky. The results may actually surprise you. I would recommend you to wait until the result is out, and then, after looking at your score, decide whether you need to reappear for the improvement exam or not.
Wish you all the best for the results!

快穿系统女主深吻hDoes additional subject's marks is calculated for admission in canada universities i had math with low marks and in other compulsory subjects i had score good marks

Dear Anmol,
快穿系统女主深吻h Your transcript would have scores of every subject (whether optional or compulsory). Though the admission committee considers your overall score/CGPA while evaluating your profile, your application is affected by your performance in major subjects. If the course you are applying to has Mathematics as a major subject, then it would affect your candidature. However, if Mathematics is not a major subject in the programme you are applying to now, then your low score in Mathematics should not have a greater impact on your candidature.

Hi Siddarth,
Your Diploma history should not be a problem while applying to Canadian colleges since you have a good score in bachelors. However, since you have 1 backlog in bachelors as well, the good Canadian colleges may end up checking your entire profile history and accordingly decide whether the admission should be granted or not. Considering that your diploma backlogs number is really high, I would recommend that you connect with our expert counsellors, who would help you shortlist and apply to safe colleges in Canada or elsewhere. Hi Sumit,
If you are applying to countries other than Australia and New Zealand, then the lastest/updated marksheet would do. However, for these 2 countries, all the marksheets would need to be legalized. Hi Sanju,
快穿系统女主深吻h Backlogs do not have a direct impact on visa approval. If the university has already granted you admission then the backlogs would not affect your visa chance, thus there would be no requirement of attaching the backlog certificate while applying for the visa. I hope it clarifies your doubt.
